Barack Obama’s Views on Abortion

The more I delve into Barack Obama’s policies, the more I see a certain trend: question evasion.  According to Time.com, on August 17, 2008, Obama and McCain both fielded questions about abortion from Pastor Rick Warren in Lake Forest, California.  Warren simply asked, “At what point does a human being get human rights?”

McCain: “At the point of conception.”
Obama: “Whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity is above my pay grade.”

Wow. Could the man be any more vague. Exactly what pay grade is there that is higher than one of the President of the United States? I don’t think one exists in the whole world.

I read up on some other blog sites, as well as on some news articles, and McCain was highly critized for “taking such a strong stand,” as numerous people put it.  Well, heaven forbid that someone take a stand! For the past eight years all we could get out of Bush was that he hoped to promote a “culture of life,” and all Obama can say is that he doesn’t get paid enough to answer that question. I don’t get paid a tenth of what Obama does, and I can say that I disagree with abortion!

I researched methods of abortion, and here are a few. I know that I could not do these acts as a parent:

Suction Aspiration: This method is used in the early stages of pregnancy. In clinical terms, manual vacuum aspiration, or MVA, involves the use of a manual syringe to remove the fetus by suction. An electric pump is used in the electric vacuum aspiration, or EVA. Basically, a hollow tube with a sharp edge is inserted into the uterus, and the fetus along with the placenta is sucked out into a bottle.

Dilation and Curettage, or D&C: This method is similar to Suction Aspiration, except that a curette, which is a surgical instrument that is shaped like scoop is inserted into the uterus, which is used to scrape out the fetus and the placenta. This method is carried out during the first trimester, and usually there is heavy bleeding.

Dilation and Evacuation, or D&E: This is performed after the third month of the pregnancy. The cervix is first dilated, and an instrument resembling pliers is inserted into the uterus. Then, the fetus’ body is removed piece by piece with the instrument, and the skull is pulled out after it is crushed.

Dilation and Extraction, or D&X: This method is usually used from the 4th month of pregnancy to the 9th month. In this, the fetus’s body is pulled out with the help of forceps. Since the head is too large by this time, surgical instruments are used to penetrate the skull and the brain sucked out in order to decompress the skull. This method is also referred to as ‘partial birth abortion’.

Prostaglandin Abortion: This is a hormone by which labor is induced. Usually, the fetus dies due to the trauma of the delivery. But, sometimes, when this procedure is carried at the later stages of pregnancy, the fetus is born alive. Hence, in order to prevent this from occurring, a drug is injected into the fetus’s heart first, and then the prostaglandin is administered, thus a dead fetus is aborted. Sometimes, this method is accompanied by the amniotic fluid being removed and the sac infused with corrosive solutions that contain urea or saline, prior to the prostaglandin being administered, to ensure the death of the fetus, which can take several hours. This procedure is used during the mid- to late-term of pregnancies.

In 1997, Obama voted against Illinois State Bill 230, which would ban partial birth abortions.  This legislation defined a fetus as a person, and would have banned partial birth abortions.

Mothers, can you support a man who says that it is okay to do the previous things to your baby?  Suck their brains out?  Scrape them out with a spatula?  Dismember them?  I hope not.

Remember, those who make the decisions about abortion are those people who were not aborted when they were a child.

  1. good luck on trying to overturn roe vs wade john… we will see how far that gets us as a country

  2. It will mean we are not murdering babies, which is pretty far, I think.

  3. The president makes $400,000 a year. Congress increased it to that amount in 1999. Just some info for you.

On abortion- what about such cases as rape of a young girl who could suffer many complicatoins from carrying a child with such an underdeveloped body or when the pregnancy is potentially fatal to the mother or child or both or other horrible unforseen circumstances. One cannot present these cases and offer abortion as an option for these circumstances without being misquoted or misrepresented as being “pro-abortion” or a “baby murderer”.

  4. I hear on NPR that Obama’s plan to reduce abortion is much more practical and likely to happen than the Republican’s trying to overturn Roe v. Wade.

  5. The continuation of rhetoric about being pro-life but not having a realistic plan has tired me of the Republican Party. As more and more evangelicals walk away, I hope Republicans will stop giving lip-service to this important issue. My hope is they will realize they are going to lose more and more votes until they are willing to engage in a bipartisan effort to make progress with comprehensive legislation that is realistic and actual. It would take a miracle for John Mccain to get congress to overturn Roe vs. Wade…

Caitlin you are so liberal. Good luck at the Christmas parties… I love it.

  6. Go Ross!

  7. Ross, I agree with you to an extent…but I am not sure that “reaching across the aisle” to meet someone halfway on the mutilation of babies is the way to go…

I am not saying I have THE answer, but I am not sure that meeting halfway is it.

But maybe if that is all we can get…? Maybe instead of 30,000 abortions a year, it gets cut down to 15,000? At least we are able to save half…

  8. Sorry I’m so far out on time on this one! Just found your blog Josh!

I think everyone has awesome points and not trying to be a smart aleck but in reality I really don’t think it matters what we think. I really believe it matters what God thinks. One scripture that comes to mind is an oft-used one:I formed and knew you in the womb. How do we take this? What if by that statement God means that when we are still in the womb, whether at 1st month or last, that He knew me, Donnie, and He saw my life from start to finish, and that He loved me just as much at that point as He did when He allowed Jesus to die for me. If He meant that, then surely abortion is a great and evil abomination to Him.

I think Josh, by Obama’s statement, his true colors could not be any clearer. He will walk the top of the fence on any issue that might cost him votes, or to possibly gain some.
